A Home Full of History
Wayne’s home in Kramer, North Dakota has been in his family for generations. Built in 1930 and passed down from his parents, it holds decades of memories.
But over the years, the house began to show its age. What once felt solid and familiar slowly became harder to maintain. Small issues turned into larger ones, and the home Wayne had always relied on was becoming increasingly unsafe.
It wasn’t just his living space at risk. In the basement, Wayne runs a small upholstery business, making the condition of the home essential not only to his housing, but to his livelihood.
What had always been a source of stability was starting to feel uncertain.
A Growing Safety Risk
One of the most serious issues was a badly leaking roof. During winter storms, snow and moisture would collect in the attic and eventually drip onto exposed electrical wiring that had deteriorated over time, creating a real risk of electrical failure or fire.
The condition of the home was also preventing Wayne from obtaining insurance. Without coverage, both his housing and his home-based business were at risk.
Repairs were no longer routine or manageable. The problems had reached a point Wayne could not address on his own.

Weatherization Steps In

Through the Community Action Weatherization Program, Wayne was able to receive critical repairs that addressed the most urgent safety concerns in his home.
After a full inspection, the Weatherization team identified several areas requiring immediate attention.
Repairs included:
- Roof repairs to stop ongoing leaks
- Electrical work to eliminate safety hazards
- Replacement of failing windows
- Plumbing repairs discovered during the inspection process
These improvements focused on stabilizing the home’s structure and addressing hazards that threatened Wayne’s safety.
Protecting a Home and a Livelihood
With these repairs completed, Wayne’s home is now safe, dry, and structurally sound.
The roof no longer leaks, eliminating the moisture that had been damaging the home’s interior systems. Electrical hazards have been removed, and plumbing issues that could have caused future damage were resolved before they became larger problems.
Just as importantly, the improvements helped preserve Wayne’s ability to continue operating his upholstery business from the basement.
For Wayne, this meant more than fixing a house. He was protecting the home his parents left behind and maintaining the small business that supports his independence.
Weatherization’s Impact in Rural Communities
Across North Dakota, many homeowners live in older houses that carry decades of history but require significant upgrades to remain safe and efficient.
Programs like Weatherization make it possible for residents to preserve these homes, address safety hazards, and remain stable in the communities they call home.
For Wayne, the repairs provided peace of mind and the ability to continue living and working in the place that holds his family’s legacy.

What was once becoming a serious safety risk is now a safe, livable home that allows me to continue operating my small business.
