Struggling to Stay Warm

Elaine lives alone in Edmore, North Dakota, in a home built in 1953. It’s a place she knows well, but over the years, it had become harder to keep up.

Her furnace had grown unreliable, and the house lacked proper insulation. As winter approached, the cold started to settle in and stay.

Living alone, Elaine began to worry about how she would get through the months ahead. Keeping her home warm was no longer a given. It was becoming a daily concern.

Reaching Out for Assistance

Elaine contacted Community Action (Wx Force) after experiencing ongoing furnace problems and difficulty maintaining heat in her home.

A full Weatherization assessment was conducted to identify the most urgent needs. The inspection revealed that both the heating system and insulation required significant improvements to ensure the home could remain safe and energy efficient.

Without intervention, the conditions in the home posed serious health and safety concerns.

Improvements That Made a Difference

Through the Weatherization program, Community Action (Wx Force) coordinated several key upgrades to improve the safety and efficiency of Elaine’s home.

Improvements included:

  • Installation of a new furnace
  • Replacement of the water heater
  • Insulation improvements to reduce heat loss

These upgrades significantly improved the home's ability to retain heat and maintain a stable indoor temperature during the winter months.

As a result of the repairs and upgrades, Elaine can now remain safely in her home with reliable heating and improved energy efficiency.

For older residents living independently, stable housing and dependable heating are critical for maintaining both health and independence.

Elaine shared that without this assistance, she does not believe she would have been able to remain safely in her home.
